Cupping for Pain Relief: Initial Visit

Description

Cupping therapy is based on the Traditional Chinese Medical method of encouraging healing by creating negative pressure via suction. We as massage therapists apply it differently than eastern medicine; the main purposes are to reduce pain and improve soft tissue mobility in the affected area. The vacuum decompresses the area, which may allow tight muscles to relax. It will increase blood flow to the area, which brings nutrients to help with healing. Our clients most often experience the benefits of reduced pain, improved soft tissue mobility, increased flexibility and longer lasting results than a regular Swedish or deep tissue massage. What to expect: - A therapist will discuss the client's treatment goals for the session, and may ask the client to perform a mobility assessment. This will take no longer than five minutes. - The therapist will place various suction cups on the skin, creating a vacuum that lifts the skin and tissue. The therapist may move the cups over the tissue or ask the client to move their body parts. - The suction cups can remain on the skin for up to 20 minutes. The therapist will ask the client to provide feedback in pressure and tension level. Because pain tolerance varies from person to person, the client will remain in control of the experience at all times. Most of the time, the client will experience a decrease in tension within 90 seconds of the cup placement. *Note: If you take medicine that moves blood or affects the heart, such as high blood pressure medicine, this technique may not be appropriate for you.
